Alaturka's Kafadar of Tamoora
"Surrogate Mom"
On April 21, 2000 at approximately 9:45 a.m. we went out to the goat pasture to check on one of our first time mothers who was due to have babies any day, sure enough there they were, twin girls we named "Laverne and Shirley". But no mother goat was in sight! To our surprise there stood Kafadar, licking and cleaning the babies who were less than 1 hour old! He cleaned off all the afterbirth and licked the babies dry!
We feel that the the mother goat had the babies and left them in the sack and walked away (boy is she dumb). Kafadar who is always near a pregnant mother ready to give birth, immediately went over to the babies and cleaned them up. He had traces of blood on his snout and legs. We had to go and hunt the mother, put her in a small pen with the babies and make her feed them. That was one thing Kafadar could not do for the babies!
She has now taken the responsibility of feeding her babies and will stay locked in the small pen with the babies for another week or so. Kafadar lays outside the pen watching "his babies".
We got a few pictures for you all to see. We are always amazed as to the gentleness, caring and intelligence of this breed!
